FlickrMission Group
I’ve joined a group on www.flickr.com called “FlickrMissions” created by my flickr friend, {platinum} who has posted on this here blog a few times. Members are assigned a “Mission” for each month where we all take a master theme with 5 categories of pictures and take photographs to enter a contest for the best ones. For the month of February, our winner from last month chose the Chinese New Year as the theme with picture categories relating to the 5 elements: Fire, Earth, Water, Metal, and Wood. This month we also have a bonus category, Dog, in honor of 2006…the Year of (you guessed it) the Dog.
Here are a few of the entries I’ve posted…click each image to see them larger.
You may recognize my entry for “Earth. This is a picture of one of the iris bulbs that I asked you all to say a little prayer for…they’re doing just fine as you can see!
This group has been great for me. There is a rule that only allows you to post two pictures from your archive. All others must be newly shot for this particular contest. So, everything except the dog picture (shot last October at my parent’s house of Jasmine) is new! This competition has been great motivation to get snappin’! Plus, I get to compete against Joe who joined for this month’s competition! Game on!

The fire one looks really neat at the largest size. You can see distinct regions of the flame.
I find it interesting that the Chinese have 5 elements instead of 4, and they don’t have “Air.” By the way, why no picture of “Water”?
Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 10:22 pmI have this nifty tool that allows me to post the last few pictures I’ve posted to flickr, onto a blog post. The water picture was an older one…but here’s the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mpopp/22075400/
Short answer…I was lazy. :p
Fri Feb 17, 2006 at 2:18 pmNah, if you were really lazy you’d stop blogging altogether! (Like me!) Neat water pic, too! You make me want to get a good digital SLR. When I get a real job (probably before my 37th birthday) I’ll buy one.
Sun Feb 19, 2006 at 2:15 pmThanks Olt! I’ve really enjoyed the 20D. It’s a good camera for us. The hard part is when Joe and I are both somewhere together and we want to take pictures at the same time. :p
I’d also recommend that you join flickr. It’s a groovy group of shutterbugs and I’ve really enjoyed how the groups I’ve joined have challenged me to be a better photographer. These people are inspirational!
Mon Feb 20, 2006 at 11:47 amIt’s hard to decide which one is my favorite. I really like the metal, but the wood is great too. Nice work!
Tue Feb 21, 2006 at 7:51 pmThanks Shana!
Wed Feb 22, 2006 at 8:50 amHey Monique, that was a great set, I especially loved the iris bulb - it got my vote! Glad you’re loving the group, can’t wait to see what you come up with for this mission!
Mon Feb 27, 2006 at 10:22 pmThanks {platinum}! You’ve created a great group with a bunch of really talented people. I love the challenge!
Tue Feb 28, 2006 at 11:09 amUpdate…I did not win for any of my pictures for last month’s flickrMission but I’m told I was a very close second for my Iris Bulb picture. Joe, on the other hand, won for his picture of the “Golden State Bridge” for the metal category. I voted for him on this picture…great colors and symmetry! Congrats Joe!
