Civil War at the Popp’s
So, Joe and I have been working on redecorating our master bedroom and this weekend was no exception. We’ve gotten a little more than half of the room painted with light blue on the walls and a dark, espresso brown on all of the trim. On Saturday evening I went downstairs for a drink of water and found Dusty, our cat, sitting at attention at our french doors leading out to the patio. She is usually a laid back cat so I did a double take. On the opposite side of the door sat a cat that I’ve seen around the neighborhood before. Dusty was sniffing and she started to make weird noises.
That’s when Owen came down the stairs to see what was going on. He sat down next to Dusty and they both continued to stare at the stranger. I called up to Joe who brought the camera down. We got a few pictures (that I’ll post later) of the excitement. Joe went back up stairs and I sat on the floor with the cats to see what would happen next…but I hadn’t bargained for what I got.
A chorus of cat cries commenced and both Owen and Dusty’s hind ends were dancing as though they’d both take flight at any moment. I thought, how sweet…both cats working together to scare off a common foe. I actually thought that this experience might bring the two of them closer together…which as many of you know, is long over due. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
We still don’t know what happened but all of a sudden Dusty turned and pounced onto Owen. I was shocked! She chased him over to our stairs and tackled him again. Usually the tables are turned but this time Dusty had Owen pegged. Joe yelled at them to stop as they ran up the stairs to where he was and he grabbed Dusty and let Owen run under the bed. She had it in for him though, and throughout the course of the night she stocked him and taunted him. It was as though a switch had been flipped inside of her and the last four years of taunting had caught up with him in one sweet moment. Almost like the car scene at the dance with Biff and George McFly in Back to the Future.
We didn’t know what to do with these two cats so Joe slept with Dusty in the guest room and I slept with Owen in the master bedroom. The separation seemed to help a little but there was still a little friction today as I left for work. They seem to be working things out though, and even sat near each other on our bed last night for a little bit to sleep.
I wonder if the dynamics of the house have changed for good, leaving Dusty as little miss dominatrix…

I thought the civil war was going to be over decorative differences between you and Joe! BTW, how do those end-tables look?
Wed Mar 16, 2005 at 7:04 pmThey’re perfect! We want to finish up the room this weekend if possible. I’ll post pictures when it’s all done. No decorative difference that would cause a civil war…yet.
Thu Mar 17, 2005 at 10:14 amDo you think she took his little green elephant? I know it disappeared! I can just imagine the look on his face when she came after him!
Thu Mar 17, 2005 at 10:21 amHa ha…I wouldn’t put it past her! Everything seems to be back to normal. My friend Rebecca suggested giving them some baby food (turkey with gravy) on their own plates, and put them right next to eachother. Everybody is in a good mood again. They were sniffing eachother, nose to nose the other night. It almost looked as though they were kissing. I think we’re going to be ok.
