Tiger Murdered
I was abhorred to hear that authorities shot and killed a tiger near Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley (many home owners in the area have exotic animals as pets). They claim that had they used tranquilizers, there was a chance that the tiger would have attacked them because it could take up to 10 minutes for the tranq to work. It seems to me that they had quite a few other options…they made a poor choice and killed an animal unnecessarily. Murderers.

I hope you didn’t see the news coverage last week - it was truly disgusting. I understand that they are looking for the owners in order to bring up criminal charges. The Humane Society and PETA are also looking in to the Police action! It was bizarre!
Tue Mar 1, 2005 at 10:05 amMurderers? What were their other options? Shoot the tranquilizer and then track it for 5-10 minutes, shooting to kill only if necessary? I’m not saying this is at all a silly option, but wondering what you expected them to do.
We shouldn’t pretend, though, that tigers are not dangerous. You might also check this link: http://www.bartleby.com/61/44/A0014400.html

Yes, I think the best course of action would have been to use the tranq first or use a helocopter to drop a cage over him/her and then determine if killing the animal was necessary. People in that area have exotic animals as pets so this cat may have been more domesticated than a wild tiger. I was upset only because they took such drastic measures at first.

Tue Mar 8, 2005 at 2:57 pmI would also add that having a tiger as a pet isn’t the smartest idea and probably isn’t in the tiger’s best interest.
Tue Mar 8, 2005 at 3:15 pmI dunno . . . I hear it’s pretty hard for a tiger to find work in India.
I now envision a kind of net-gun that gets the cat all tangled up, allowing the heli to come in with the cage. Still, sounds like a pretty dangerous maneuver for the pilot.
